Women's Empowerment Month - FF/P Jenny Alustiza

In honor of Women's Empowerment Month this March, TDFPD would like to introduce Firefighter/Paramedic

Jenny Alustiza

who has served the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District for 8 years.

After graduating with a BA in psychology from Colorado University - Boulder,  Alustiza moved to Lake Tahoe and began working at Stateline Medical Center. In that capacity, she was encouraged to get her EMT certification; and through the EMT classes at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC), she learned about the LTCC Fire Academy. While gaining EMT experience through the Sierra Ski Resort - Ski Patrol program, Jenny enrolled in the fire academy and that was it - she had found the right path. Jenny completed paramedic school and worked for the USFS as a Forestry Tech/EMT where she was introduced to Tahoe Douglas Fire (TDF).

"It was exciting and challenging; and fulfilled my desire to help people and to stay healthy and fit all at once, " says Alustiza.

"Ten and a half years later I am still so grateful for this career opportunity."

We asked FF/P Alustiza, what gives her the greatest sense of satisfaction in her job as a firefighter/paramedic? "I believe the thank you's we receive on a daily basis are what make this job so great and worth while."

What's a piece of advice she could give to other aspiring female FF/P? "To the young, aspiring women out there who are looking to get involved with the fire service, I would say train hard - train your mind and body, especially your upper body. Go to a good paramedic school. Keep your head up and your eyes on the prize. Don’t ever let failure, or adversity get you down."

In addition to her firefighter/paramedic duties, FF/P Alustiza is the Lead for TDF's fire hose program coordinating testing, and replacement needs.  She is a Field Training Officer (FTO) guiding the training and development for new EMTs.  Jenny also excels in TFD's public education programs and is especially effective with your community children and teaching them fire safety.
