Ash Can Program
“Heating equipment and improper ash disposal are leading causes of home and wildland fires during the fall and winter months. According to the National Fire Protection Association charcoal or other solid-fueled fires were involved in 1,100 home fires per year, including 600 structure fires and 500 outside fires annually.”
What is the ash can program?
The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District has partnered with South Tahoe Refuse to provide ash cans to the homeowners of the Fire District for the safe disposal of hot ashes. This program is available free of charge to residents of the Fire District who use a wood-burning appliance to heat their homes.
How to obtain a free ash can?
To obtain a free ash can during regular business hours, homeowners can visit Station 23 in Round Hill across from Safeway. Homeowners must have proof of residence in district.
Office Hours are Monday – Thursday 8: 00am – 5:00pm.
Full ash cans can be dumped at TDFPD Station #23, 193 Elks Point Road, Zephyr Cove, in the rear parking lot in a bright red dumpster.
