Fire Adapted Communities

Wildfire is everyone's responsibility

Tahoe Douglas Fire is a proud member of the Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities! TNFAC is a program designed to assist homeowners in creating defensible space and protect communities in the Lake Tahoe region from wildfire. Fire Adapted Communities are communities in high wildfire risk areas where residents take individual action and collectively reduce their neighborhood’s risk from wildfire. A homeowners defensible space works in conjunction with wildland fuel reduction to create a Fire Adapted Community.

This program is designed to get neighbors to talk to neighbors about the importance of defensible space.  The program is managed by the Tahoe Resource Conservation district working in partnership with local fire districts but operated by ordinary neighbors who want to help Tahoe avoid a catastrophic wildland fire.

Homeowners working with homeowners can prevent the next tragedy.  In fact, community action has prevented fires from igniting homes many times since the Angora Fire.
